There are sixteen Bill Gray's restaurants between the Buffalo and Rochester area. These are classic burger joints serving classic hamburgers on hard rolls. Some Bill Gray's include an Abbots Frozen Custard addition, and several others include a separate tap room.
Bill Gray's was disqualified in the 2013 and 2014 Burger Joint competition for two reasons: (1) I was once charged $8.50 for a double bacon cheese burger, (2) the prices are outrageous (unless you have a coupon, and (3) the burgers are good... But not uniquely good.
There are many other things on the menu including fish and chicken dinners, salads, soups, hot dogs, and more.
I would go to Bill Grey's more often if the prices weren't so high. $4.50 for a cheeseburger. Years ago Bill Greys got deep I to the "buy one get one" coupons. To make money, they had to jack up the price of the cheese burger. That meant: if you had a coupon you were buying a competitively priced sandwich. Without the coupon? Rip off! Since then, other fast food restaurants have risen their prices. Today, a McDonald's quarter pounder with cheese can cost as much as a Bill Grey's cheeseburger. Nevertheless, the image has been burned in my mind: Bill Grey's is expensive, even if that might no longer be the case.
The food is always good, the variety of the menu is nice, and the hot sauce unique and meaty.
I give Bill Gray's a 4 out of 4. If I was in the neighborhood, I would stop by.
